Chapter 11

Nothing is ever as easy as we hope it will be.

—How to Have a Perfect Life

Amy wanted to meet him. The thought had Byron in a panic as he paced before the monitors wondering what to do. The screen for the kitchen remained off, but he knew she’d be appearing on the others soon, bringing his breakfast.

What was he going to say to her?

He couldn’t meet her. She’d freak.

She thought he was a lonely, scarred recluse hiding in a tower, ashamed of how he looked. How would she react when she discovered he was Byron Parks, the bored billionaire, hiding from his meaningless life?

He realized suddenly he’d give up all his looks if he could be the man Amy thought he was. If he could step out of the tower that everting and have her smile and assure him his appearance didn’t matter. If he could take her into his arms and kiss her, the way he’d wanted to for days. If he could take her upstairs and make love to her all night.

That fantasy brought him up short.

What was he thinking?

Amy wanting to “meet” him didn’t mean she wanted to become physically involved with him. Just because they’d been discussing sex right before she’d dropped her bomb didn’t necessarily mean she wanted to meet him that way. Kind, compassionate Amy simply wanted to draw out the lonely man living in the tower.

Okay, that settled his swirling thoughts some. Nothing to panic over. When she brought his breakfast, he’d simply tell her no. She couldn’t make him reveal himself. And while he didn’t mean to hide his identity forever, he could certainly keep up the game for the three weeks she’d be around.

“Good morning,” she said brightly. He whirled toward the monitors and realized she’d snuck up on him. She was already in the office below, carrying his tray to the dumbwaiter. From the color staining her cheeks, he knew the cheer in her voice was hiding a lot of nervousness. “Did you manage to get some sleep last night?”

Not a bit, he wanted to tell her.

“Are you there?” she asked when he didn’t respond.

“I’m here.” He saw the tray arrive on his level but made no move to retrieve it. Instead, he stayed before the monitor, riveted by her image.

“I’m glad,” she said. Wearing one of her sundresses, she stepped back to smile at the camera. The dress emphasized the fullness of her breasts, the dip of her waist, the roundness of her hips. His hands ached to explore those curves. “I want to thank you again for talking to me last night. As I’m sure you noticed, that is not a comfortable subject for me, but

I’m glad you encouraged me to share how I feel. You can be very determined when you set your mind to helping me with my hang-ups.

“So I’ve decided to give you fair warning that I mean to be just as determined to help you. I realize you’re nervous about tonight, but don’t be.
